Light Requirements:

• Low to Medium Light: One of the main attractions of Bucephalandra Red Dragon Fly is its ability to thrive in low to medium light conditions. This makes it an excellent choice for tanks with low-tech setups or for aquarists who do not use CO2 injection. While the plant can tolerate higher light levels, excessive light may lead to algae growth on the leaves, so moderate lighting is ideal.

Substrate and Planting:

• Rhizome Planting: Like other Bucephalandra species, the Red Dragon Fly should not be planted deeply in the substrate. The rhizome must remain above the substrate to prevent rotting. You can tie or glue the plant to rocks, driftwood, or other decorations in your aquarium, where it will slowly anchor itself and grow.
• Nutrient Requirements: Although Bucephalandra can grow in a variety of substrates, it benefits from nutrient-rich environments. Adding root tabs or using a quality aquarium fertilizer will enhance its growth and color vibrancy, but this plant can still thrive in less nutrient-dense substrates, provided the water column is supplemented with liquid fertilizers.

It does not need frequent trimming, and its slow growth means it won’t quickly overtake your tank. This makes it a perfect plant for aquarists who prefer a “set it and forget it” type of plant. However, occasional cleaning may be required to remove algae from its leaves if exposed to high lighting.
• Resilience: This plant can survive a wide range of conditions, making it ideal for beginners or those with fluctuating water parameters. It can also survive for short periods out of water, making it a suitable candidate for paludariums or aquascapes where the plant is partially submerged.
